JACK STEVENS John Leroy Stevens, known as Jack, was born April 7, 1945 in Santa Monica, CA & died June 10, 2015 while with his son, Matthew Windsor Stevens. Cause of death was complications due to brain cancer & heart condition. Jack was a graduate of Las Vegas High School before going into the Army. He was a Vietnam veteran (9/65-6/67, 25th Infantry Division) & a Bronze Star recipient. Jack had a career in banking, having worked at Hemet Federal Savings Bank for 35 years, continuing after multiple mergers. He retired as a bank examiner with the FDIC in April. Jack lived in Riverside for 40 years & was very involved in the Riverside community. Most recently, he was a board member of Fair Housing Council of Riverside County, Community Investment Corporation, Habitat for Humanity, Riverside Housing Development Corporation & Cultural Heritage Board. He was universally known as a generous man; he made a hobby of gifting others with what he'd made or purchased for them. An avid traveler and history buff, he enjoyed every museum he could find as well as boating on the Colorado River. He loved restoring cars & bonding with family & friends over them. Jack rode dirt bikes up until his mid 50's, liked to cook, made & refinished furniture, collected historical prints & ethnic art. He is survived by his only son, Matt (Jamie) Stevens; mother, Bertha "Betty" Stevens of TN; & three bothers, Pat (Jacki) of Hemet, CA, Jerry (Brenda) of TN & Lance Stevens of FL, & his long time companion, Debbie Harger of Wildomar, CA. A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 20 at 10am - 1pm at Sandals Church (150 Palmyrita Ave., Riverside, CA 92507). You are invited to join his family & loved ones to celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, please make gifts in the form of a donation to the Jack Stevens Scholarship Fund at The Community Foundation (951-241-7777, ask for Jose).
