James Gregory Casseday Obituary
JAMES GREGORY CASSEDAY May 15, 1927 - December 17, 2015 Life Tribute James (Jim) Casseday was a loving family man with a beautiful soul who peacefully passed away on December 17, 2015, at his home in Riverside, Ca. His last hours were spent with those who loved him, his devoted wife, Catherine (Kitty) Casseday of 63 years and his loving "Daddy's girl" daughter, Michaele Casseday-Bookstore-Wussow, by his side, holding his hands and praying for a safe journey to the Lord. His son-in law Peter Wussow and Jim's team of 6 caregivers were seldom out of sight. Jim was 88½ years old. His infectious humor, love and appreciation for his family and friends will be forever in our hearts. Jim recently said, "If you're not having fun, why stick around?" With that we honor his passing where he meets up with his loving parents, John Bryce and Patricia Theresa Casseday, sisters Tedie, Carmen and Patsy, and his brother John. He lived the longest of all his immediate family members and enjoyed most every minute. This proves that See's Candy, football, ice cream and Mexican food are the staples of a happy life. Jim attended St. Francis De Sales Parochial School as a child where he developed lifelong friendships. He worked as an elevator bellhop at the Riverside Mission Inn as a teenager, prior to World War II, where he carried the luggage of some of Hollywood's greatest stars, including Bob Hope and Ethel Merman. He was drafted into the Navy as World War II broke out and was stationed on a submarine tender ship. After serving four years, Jim received an honorable discharge. He returned home and became employed at Edison Electric and Cliff Moore's Mobil Filling Station, corner of 14th and Main Street, for a period of time. He met and married his lifelong love, Kitty, after capturing her eye in church. He always said it was her beauty and big red hat that drew him in. His proud and long career of 40 years with the United States Postal Service began in 1951 where he started as an on foot letter carrier in downtown Riverside. Advanced to Station Supervisor, Assistant Post Master and closed his career at age 62 as the Southern California Safety Officer. During retirement, from 1990 through 2007, he volunteered 17,137 hours to Riverside Community Hospital where he guided the incoming medical students in their early exposure to the hospital environment. He became loved by all, the administrative staff, physicians and fellow volunteers. All who knew him were grateful for his contributions. He was actually chosen to visit patients' bedsides and tell them jokes to liven their spirits. He treasured his extended family and felt privileged to provide his time. Football was his deepest passion. He kept score, the time clock, and yards and downs with his two closest friends, George Osborn and Tony Citerrela, at Riverside City College for 40, yes 40 football seasons! When asked during his last days if he thought there would be football in heaven, his immediate response was just one word"Absolutely!!!" Jim will be sincerely missed, but never forgotten. All of those wishing to remember Jim are invited to celebrate his life, acknowledge his everlasting humor and share treasured memories with his family and friends. All are welcome to join in a Funeral Mass that will be held on Thursday, January 21st, 2016, at 11:00am at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 3774 Jackson St., Riverside, CA. 92503. The celebration of his gentle and kind soul will continue in the parish hall. For those who will and those who won't be able to attend, please know you were all very important to Jim and he would want you to know he appreciated everything you added to his life. Jim was filled with love and joy. Online book signing and funeral information can be accessed at the Inland Memorial Mortuary website: inlandmemorial.com
