James Matthew Kross Obituary
JAMES MATTHEW KROSS, age 76, passed away on 9/19/2015 at Riverside Community Hospital from brain cancer. He was born on 4/6/1939 in Teaneck, New Jersey. He had lived in Riverside, CA for 65 years, previously in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He served in the U.S. Navy with 2 tours of duty in Vietnam, graduated from Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. He retired as a Commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve (12/61-9/99) as CDR05. He obtained an MA in Education and Physical Ed, MA in Psychology in 1979 from Azusa Pacific College, BA from Fresno State College in Physical Education, Health Ed/Physical Science. He obtained his AA degree from Riverside City College. He was a member of the faculty of RCC as a coach, athletic director and administrator from 1972-2000 where he retired. He began his teaching career as a teacher and coach at John North High School from 1968-1972. He was inducted into the RCC Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002. He was a member of Tiger Backers, Exchange Club and Grove Community Church. James is survived by his wife Carolyn Sue of Riverside; daughter Jill Marie of El Cajon, CA; son Matthew James of Lake Havasu, AZ; brother John Kross of Texas; stepchildren Steven Bradley and Karen Bradley, both of Redlands, CA and Warren (Maria) Bradley of Menifee, CA; and 6 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents John Kross and Gertrude Sloan of New Jersey; Visitation will be on Sunday, 10/4/2015 from 2-4pm at Acheson & Graham Garden of Prayer Mortuary in Riverside, CA. Funeral Service will be on Monday, 10/5/2015 from 12-1pm at The Grove Community Church, 19900 Grove Community Drive, Riverside, CA with burial to follow at 2pm, Riverside National Cemetery, 22495 Van Buren Blvd,, Riverside. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to The Jim Kross Memorial Endowed Athletic Scholarship, c/o RCCD Foundation, 4800 Magnolia Ave., Riverside, CA 92506.
