Jane Elisabeth (Thomas) Lamar Obituary
JANE ELISABETH LAMAR (THOMAS) 1/2/1925 - 5/17/2015 It is with deep regret to report that one of Riverside's Matriarchs, Jane Elisabeth Lamar (Thomas) peacefully passed away on Sunday, May 17, 2015. Jane lived a very full 90 years. She was born in Long Beach. At age two she moved with her family to Riverside where her father opened a Studebaker Agency. Completing the Riverside school system she had aspirations of studying commercial and fine art under Millard Sheets at Scripps College. To Jane's disappointment Mr. Sheets was drafted into military service. This became Ed Lamar's opportunity to propose marriage to Jane. That looked especially good to her. They were married at her family home on August 8, 1943. Jane is survived by two children, Tom and Margee; seven grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and one great, great grandchild. Jane's middle child, Elizabeth Ann, (Betsy), passed away at the age of 47 leaving two sons, Sam and Chris Barrett. Jane was a very accomplished artist and philanthropist in Riverside. She sold her paintings from the Riverside Art Center Gallery. She gave several "one man" shows. As a philanthropist, Jane was a people person which illuminates her many hours of philanthropy. She was a founding member of the Riverside National Charity League in 1960 along with her daughters. She also took a very active role in the Junior Aid (which became known as the Junior League), Art Alliance, Heritage House Museum Association, the Salvation Army and PEO, a Christian Sisterhood that gives college scholarships to young woman. Jane, on many occasions, offered the use of her home for charitable fund raisers. She loved decorating her home for every party, holiday and season. Her exceptional artistic talent, her love of people and entertaining made visits to her home very special. She will always be remembered for the Christmas lawn decorations of "The Snoopy family and friends" display depicting "HAPPY FAMILY TIME". Jane's husband, Edward, passed in 2002. In her later years she married Dr. Claude Merrihew. They had a wonderful three years of marriage at which time Jane was once again widowed. Family has always been very important to Jane. Jane's loss of daughter, Betsy, was devastating. Although Betsy's children lived in New York, Jane, with God's direction, was the glue that kept Sam and Chris tightly connected to the Lamar Family. Jane was the very best Mom, Friend and Wife ever! She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Services will be held at the Grove Community Church (19900 Grove Community Dr, Riverside), Thursday, June 11th at 2:00pm. A reception will follow at the church.
