JEAN HENRIETTA PORT HAYWARD Jean Hayward passed away on May 22, 2013 at the age of 101. She was born August 26, 1911, in Chicago, Illinois, and was the youngest of four children of Francis and Mary Port. She spent her childhood in Chicago and went on to the University of Chicago where she received her B.S. and M.S. degrees. After graduation she taught science to 5th - 8th graders in Chicago. On February 11, 1939, she married University of Chicago Professor Herman (Peter) Hayward. She assisted Herman with the preparation of his classic textbook, The Structure of Economic Plants. They moved to Riverside, California, where Herman was the Director of the U.S. Regional Salinity Laboratory for more than twenty years. They had three children, Fred, William and Carol. Herman passed away in 1960. In Riverside, Jean taught 5th & 6th grades at Lowell and Magnolia Elementary Schools. In addition, she was president of the Junior League, University of California Riverside Affiliates, University Campus Club, Riverside Historical Museum Board, and Bryant School P.T.A. Jean was Elder and Deacon at the Calvary Presbyterian Church. She was a tireless volunteer and derived great pleasure in serving in numerous capacities. Jean cherished spending time with family and friends. In 1996 she moved to Boise, Idaho, to be near her daughter. She was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church and looked forward to weekly Bible classes. For years she enjoyed walking with the Happy Hoofers. She is survived by son Fred (Linda Hunter) Hayward of Washington D.C.; son William Hayward of State Road, North Carolina; and daughter, Carol A. VanDusen of Boise, Idaho; six grandchildren: Kent (Lissa Hurchalla) Hayward, Alexandra (Matt) Lovitt, Mark (Lenore Thomas) Hayward, Adrian (Charmian) Dresel-Velasquez, Danya (Andrew) Moss, and Joshua (Stacy) Kriz; and nine great grandchildren: Joe, Nick, Catherine, Elliot, Jack, Sofia, Devin, Dean and Javier. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Wynwood Assisted Living for their support, compassionate care, and friendship. At Jean's request, no services will be held. The family will gather for a private ceremony to celebrate Jean's life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to .
