Jean Marie (Meisenzahl) Byrne Obituary
JEAN MARIE (MEISENZAHL) BYRNE Jean died March 16, 2016 in Riverside, California. Formerly of Port St. Lucie, FL and Westerly, RI, Mrs. Byrne was born in Rochester, NY in 1922 to Emma C. (Repp) and Albert J. Meisenzahl. A graduate of Nazareth Academy, Jean attended Nazareth College. She joined the American Red Cross in 1945, serving in the post-war effort in the Philippines for two years. Married in 1949 to John Brett Byrne of Rochester (dec'd 2012), Jean was a devoted wife and mother. She worked for Kelly Services and Grace Church in Providence RI, and was a successful cosmetics consultant for 35 years. Jean was active in many civic and volunteer organizations over the years. She volunteered at the Westerly Hospital and served over 2,000 hours as a volunteer at Port St. Lucie Hospital. She was an active member of the Port St. Lucie Business and Professional Women. Jean was a natural athlete. As a child she went fishing with her Dad, played tennis, loved skiing, taught swimming and especially enjoyed water sports. On a stopover in Hawaii during her tour with the Red Cross, she learned to surf. She sailed on Conesus Lake as a girl, and on Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island until she was 85. At 60, she learned to windsurf. She loved music and dancing. Always creative, she designed and sewed her own and her children's clothes. She was an avid knitter of mittens, sweaters, hats and socks, and enjoyed oil painting in her later years. Jean is survived by her children: Kathleen Byrne of Lake Arrowhead, CA, John Byrne of Riverside, CA, Loraine Byrne of Matunuck, RI, Margaret Byrne of Wickford, RI, and Juliet Byrne of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; and by her four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her beloved granddaughter Jennifer Lamphier. Jean was dynamic, with a love of life that energized her and all those who knew and loved her. A private service was held March 21, 2016 at Divine Word Seminary Chapel, Riverside, CA, to be followed in July by a graveside service in Exeter, RI.
