Jewell Lorraine Adams Obituary
JEWELL LORRAINE TATUM Sunrise April 30, 1927 Sunset January 24, 2013 Jewell Lorraine Adams was the third child of seven, born to Willie and Thelma (Wash) Adams on April 30, 1927 in San Antonio, Texas. Jewell received Christ at an early age, and was baptized at Shiloh Baptist Church in San Antonio. Sister Tatum's early education was conducted at Holy Redeemer Catholic School, where she attended through junior high school. She was a graduate of Phillis Wheatley High School and continued her education at Saint Phillips Junior College, where she earned an Associate of Arts degree in pre-nursing. Sister Tatum's formative education was instrumental in her acceptance to the USCMC School of Nursing in Los Angeles, California. At USC she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. Sister Tatum was later employed at Daniel Freeman Hospital, where she became the first black nursing manager. Being a nurse was a great achievement for Sister Tatum, her compassion and empathy for the sick allowed her to care for others, as well as her own mother for more than twenty-eight years. On August 20, 1949 Jewell Adams married Calvin Tatum. From this union, four children, Judy, Jackie, Calvin, Jr. and Michael; along with Beverly, a child dearly loved from a previous marriage, were raised and nurtured. In 1990 Sister Tatum became a member of Park Avenue Baptist Church in Riverside, CA. She served on several church auxiliaries that she loved and worked diligently. Sister Tatum once said that her greatest passion was being a loving wife, mother, aunt , and grandmother. She was also passionate about travel, seeing the world, working in her garden and reading books. On Thursday, January 24, 2013, Sister Tatum passed from this life to her eternal home with Jesus. Her loving mother, father, husband and four brothers welcome her into heaven. She leaves behind two sisters, her children, grandchildren; great-grand-children, nieces, nephews and a number of relatives and friends to celebrate her beautiful legacy. Services were held on February 1, 2013 at Park Avenue Baptist Church in Riverside.
