Joanne Ryman Hershey Obituary
Joanne (Jodie) passed away January 7, 2018 in Redlands, CA at 87. A native of Bakersfield, California, Joanne was born on April 2, 1930 to Elsie May and Charles Evert Griffith. When Joanne was 2 years old Elsie married James Albert Ryman who loved and raised Joanne as his own. Elsie and James had two more children and Joanne was like a second mother to them. Joanne graduated from Bakersfield High School and attended Bakersfield City College and UC Berkley. She graduated from Humboldt State with a degree in education. She fell in love with Thomas Hershey and they married on August 20, 1950. Joanne is lovingly remembered by her husband of 67 years; her children Jennifer (Justin) and Fredrick; grandchildren Bobby, Michelle and Arwyn; great granddaughter Carly; brother, Dennis (Mary Beth) and sister, Nancy (Robert). Joanne will also be forever remembered by her numerous nieces and nephews and her extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Elsie, and her first born, Susan (Judge), in 2016.
Joanne taught grade school prior to having children and worked part time as a substitute teacher while raising her family. She worked at UC Riverside for many years doing field research with various professors and researchers. She was a Docent for the Mission Inn and at the Fox Theater in Riverside and a member of Renovators for many years.
Joanne exemplified a life of service in faith. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Riverside for 50 years, including many years as the church clerk and Sunday school teacher. She was the Secretary for Thousand Pines Church Camp and went to conferences at Thousand Pines, the First Baptist National Conference and many others. As the leader of the TNT's 50 plus Ministry she planned and led monthly field trips.
She loved to entertain and each year she hosted elegant Christmas parties for various groups at their beautifully decorated home. She collected angels and belonged to the Angels Club and was a member of the Red Hat Society. She was fondly known as the "Cookie Lady" who brought home made treats every month to the Riverside City Mission and later, the Blessing Center in Redlands, Plymouth Village Skilled Nursing and any sick friends or relatives.
After Tom retired, they spent many weeks on the road, traveling and visiting friends and family. In 2014 Tom and Joanne sold their house of 50 years at the base of Mount Rubidoux and moved to Plymouth Village retirement community in Redlands.
Joanne will be missed and remembered by many for her acts of kindness, generosity, and love for others.
