Joe Leland Abernathy passed from this life December 25, 2017 after a recent illness.
He is survived by his wife, Georgia; his daughters Roseann Kendall and Joyce Ganter; two grandsons and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by eight step children. He is predeceased by his wives Merna, Nellie, his son Tom, and grandson Brad Hollis.
Joe was born December 7, 1925 in Pulaski, Tennessee, the youngest of seven children born to R. Alice Follis and Fisher W. Abernathy.
Immediately after graduating from Giles County High School and he joined the U.S. Army, as a top-turret gunner on B-24 planes in Europe. He was honorably discharged November 8, 1945.
After his military service he began working for Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company in Southern California. When he retired as an outside engineer, it was then known as Pacific Bell - now ATT. He met his future wife Merna Curtis at the bank where she worked in Banning, California. They married in September 1949. They had three children: Roseann, Tom and Joyce.
Joe was an avid hunter and fisherman. He liked all team sports but especially baseball. He was a volunteer coach for the Riverside Boys Pinto Pony League and later moonlighted as an umpire.
After Joe's wife of 29 years, Merna, passed in 1978 he married Nellie Jenks in 1979. Nellie passed unexpectedly in 1988, and in 1992 he married Georgia Cheney with whom he shared 26 happy years.
There will be a Memorial Service held at 11:30 a.m. on January 5, 2018 at the Blaine Street LDS Chapel, 181 W. Blaine St., Riverside. Private interment will be at Olivewood Cemetery. Flowers may be sent to 1540 Mulberry St., Riverside and donations may be made to in Joe's name.
