John passed away peacefully on March 14, 2017. John was born in Battle Creek, Michigan on May 3, 1934 to Donald and Ruth Benfield. As a young man, John was a commercial lobster fisherman, piloting his own boat off the New England coast. Following his fishing career, John joined the United States Air Force and served in Southern California as a crew chief.
In 1961, John began his Fire Service career with the San Bernardino City Fire Department. During his 29 year career, John owned and operated Ben's Auto & Marine. John had a knack for hot rodding Chevrolet engines and always enjoyed hard work. John loved boating with family and friends and was an avid deep-sea fisherman. John is survived by his wife Ann, sisters Deedee and Mary, and sons Mark, Dave, Don and Jay. The memorial service will be private at John's request.
