JOHN H. DOWDEN Long time Pass resident, John Dowden passed away July 12, 2013 at Cherry Valley Health Care after a lengthy illness. John was born to H.L. "Lefty" and Frieda Dowden in Los Angeles on Jan. 18, 1945. In the mid 1950's his family moved to the quiet town of Beaumont where John attended school and graduated from Beaumont High School in 1962. He served as Student Body President and excelled in baseball and football. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served proudly until 1970. His many deployments included Japan, the Philippines as well as Vietnam. After his service he enrolled in college on the GI bill and graduated with honors from Mt. San Jacinto College and Cal State University, San Bernardino, acquiring degrees in Social Science and Anthropology. A skilled woodworker and master craftsman, he opened his own business in Cherry Valley in 1978 which he operated with much success for many years. John was also very involved in his community as a board member, coach and manager for Beaumont Little League, a member of the Beaumont Kiwanis Club, the Beaumont-Cherry Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Beaumont Unified School District Board of Trustees, serving as President in 1993. He also shared his strong baritone voice with the Pass Chorale for many years. John is survived by his children, Jonathan Dowden (Lucia) of Yucaipa, Danielle Beutelschies (Scott) of Folsom and Jarrod Dowden (Karyn) of Grand Terrace. He was blessed with four grandchildren who were the light of his life. Lillian Grace, Brice Allen, Turner Martin, and Tayler Ann brought him much joy in his last years. He is also survived by sisters Anne Esau (Del) of Bend, Oregon and Ruth Dowden of Ashland, Oregon. Private services will be held at a later date.
