John Joseph Riley Obituary
JOHN JOSEPH RILEY John Riley, also known as Jack to some, passed peacefully in his home on Sunday, December 15th, 2013. John, a longtime Sacramento resident, retired from the US Postal Service in 1989 and spent time traveling around the southwest, buying a home in Yucca Valley in the mid 1990s, before settling in Hemet about 10 years ago. John was born in Hamel, MN on August 9, 1933 to Edward Riley, a farmer, and Rose Courtney Riley, a school teacher. He married Dolores Dressel in 1952 and together they had five children: Carol, Michael (deceased), Mary, Patrick (deceased), and John. The family lived in Lake Minnetonka and Minneapolis, relocating to Lakewood, California after a family vacation to the state in the mid sixties. He was an avid gold miner since the 1970s, spending many weeks each year in quest of that rare mineral. John enjoyed history, particularly as it related to California and the southwest. Family vacations focused on the historical significance of a destination. He was an accomplished mechanical hobbyist, building a dune buggy, a Baja bug, restoring classic autos and equipment, gun smithing, carpentry, home remodeling, and growing prize-worthy tomatoes. John had many peers with whom he enjoyed playing pool and discussing current events, real estate, gardening, and local history. His children and many friends will greatly miss him. In accordance with his wishes, John wanted no ceremony and made his own cremation arrangements.
