John Lawrence Breyer Jr. Obituary
JOHN LAWRENCE BREYER, JR. February 12, 1931 May 1, 2015 John Lawrence Breyer, Jr., died May 1, 2015 at the age of 84, following a lengthy illness. He leaves behind five children: daughter Kathy Welchel (Steven), son John Breyer, III (Sharon), son Patrick Breyer, daughter Julie Beuligmann (Steve), and daughter Beth Mansfield (Gregg). John was blessed with seven grandchildren: Michael Breyer (Katie), Jennifer Welchel, Sarah Breyer (Josh Roberts), Megan Welchel, Haley Beuligmann, Caroline Beuligmann, Grace Mansfield, and one great-granddaughter, Olivia Breyer. John had many cousins of whom he was very fond, as well as a large extended family of in-laws, nieces and nephews. Born February 12, 1931 in Redlands, Calif., the son of John Sr. and Ruth Breyer (Steins), John attended St. Bernardine's High School, graduating with many lifelong friends in 1948. John worked for his family business, Breyer's Liquor Store, along with his late brother Roy (Marty). John served in the Army from 1949-54, including wartime service as a corpsman during the Korea War. After returning from the war, he married Josephine Hanifin in 1953 at St. James Catholic Church in Perris, Calif. He rejoined the family business in 1954, running the Perris location for many years before eventually owning three liquor stores and a deli in Perris and Riverside. He not only took pride in his family business, but truly relished the friends he made. While raising his family in Perris and eventually building a home in Nuevo, Calif., John served as a Eucharistic minister for many years at St. James, and was an active member of Rotary International. Upon retirement, John and his wife Jo, moved to Carlsbad, Calif., and became active in St. Patrick's Catholic Church community. His beloved bride Jo died in 1996 after 42 years of marriage. John is remembered as an avid golfer with a sense of humor and infectious laugh. He enjoyed the beach, playing cards, reading, and watching old movies. Private burial will be held May 30 at Eternal Hills Memorial Park in Oceanside, Calif. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to your local hospice.
