John Merle Shaw Obituary
JOHN MERLE SHAW Age 85, of Menifee, CA, formerly of Mt. Prospect, IL until 1979, and of Canyon Lake, CA until 2000, joined the Lord peacefully on January 7, 2016. Beloved husband of Audrey (nee Nowacki) for 62 years, John is the beloved father of Darrell (Theresa), Leonard (Jennifer), Randall (Donna), Patrick (Patricia), Leslie, Marion, and Denise (Anton) Tabar; cherished grandfather of Jordan, Stephanie (Nick) Benyo, Jason, Jeffrey, Kaitlin (Joe) Becker, Kellie, Timothy, Lindsay (Adam) Rutta, Kevin (Kristen), Kyle, Wesley, Gabriel, Brian, Melody, Maxwell, Andrew, Zachary, Kristina Tabar, Joshua, Jacob, Hannah, Dustin Tabar, Courtney, and Charity; loving great grandfather of Rilynn, Dylan, and Datrick Rutta. John was born and raised in Park Ridge, IL and received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Music Education from DePaul University where he met his bride, Audrey who too graduated with a Music Education Degree. He and Audrey spent their entire careers giving private piano and organ lessons. They performed duo-piano concerts and together regaled family and friends in their home. John's musical career began in sixth and eighth grades at St. Paul of the Cross in Park Ridge. For the next 60 years he was a church organist and choir director until his 2004 retirement from St. Francis of Rome in Sun City. John's early professional career was spent as a junior high school teacher, first at Jack London Junior High School in Wheeling, IL and then at St. Francis Xavier School in Wilmette where he was also the organist and choir director until his move to California. John was a gifted musician who found pleasure in directing the orchestras for community theater groups. Between 1962 and 1978 John engaged as Musical Director for 16 productions by the Best Off Broadway Players and the Des Plaines Theater Guild. In California, he directed the Canyon Lake Choraleers for 10 years and enjoyed directing the Oasis Singers of Menifee for 10 more years. Since 1986 he judged competitions throughout southern California in his Director position as a member of the Board of Music Teachers' Association of CA. He was always willing to share his musical gifts as accompaniment to churches, schools, and community groups. This John Shaw had a disarming warmth and energy that endeared him to those with whom he came in contact. His wife, Audrey, was the center of his universe and his family was his great source of pride. He often stated, "Family is everything." He was bursting at the seams, at every opportunity, to brag about his children and their families. With an educator's heart, he demonstrated a measure of wisdom and patience that his family regarded as very special. To his sons and daughter he gave complete unconditional confidence and support thoughout their formative years and beyond. While all who knew him will miss his great bear hug and pat on the back, their hearts are joyful that his eternal reward is at hand, and they anticipate he is already busy directing the angel choirs. There will be a funeral for John Shaw on Friday, January 15 at St. Martha's Catholic Church in Murrieta, CA at 10am. Preceding the funeral will be a viewing on January 14 at Evans-Brown Mortuary in Sun City, CA from 3-7pm. EVANS BROWN MORTUARY (951) 679-1114 www.evans-brownmortuary.com/obituaries
