John Patrick "Scotty" Walsh Jr. Obituary
JOHN PATRICK "SCOTTY" WALSH, JR., age 88 years, passed away on the morning of January 14, 2016, at his home in Riverside, California. John was born in Dumbarton, Scotland, on May 4, 1927, to John Walsh and Anne O'Malley. Baptized at St. Michael's Catholic Church, in Dumbarton; he attended the parish's elementary school. His father and mother were born in Errislannan and Clifden, respectively, in Connemara, County Galway, in the Republic of Ireland; and as young adults, immigrated to Scotland; settling in a small town in the Clyde Valley outside of Glasgow. One of twelve children, John, at the age of 14 years, began working in a slaughterhouse, for piece-rate wages; earning "one shilling a sheep". He laughed when reminiscing in retirement, how hard that work was in the cold, rainy, Caledonian climate. As a teenager, John Walsh set his sights on leaving the "Old World" and going to America. John made his way by steamship to New York, in May 1949. While living in Syracuse, NY, he worked at The Hoffman Sausage Company; and for recreation on weekends, he was a regular dancer in social ballrooms playing the era's popular big band swing music. At one dance he met Mary Ann Wohlgemuth; and the two of them became a dancing sensation. Marrying her on October 6, 1952, the newlyweds left Syracuse for southern California, where they settled in the city of Bell. After one year, they relocated briefly to San Bernardino, where he had a grievous accident as a meat cutter. In rehabilitation, he was retrained as a competent welder in oxyacetylene stick electrode, and Heliarc processes; John and Mary Ann settled in Riverside in 1955. John retired from government civil service and worked as a meat cutter at Country Village Market, in Pedley; followed by Ranchland Market, in Norco; and Ron's Foods, in Riverside, from which he retired. "Scotty", as he affectionately came to be known, when asked about hardships, would quip: "There was a time in my youth when I wouldn't enter the same pasture with a 2,000 pound bull." With a fearless work ethic, self discipline, and belief in himself, John returned to the trade he knew best, that of an Old World master butcher, moving his knife with absolute mastery and incomparable skill! He knew the anatomy and cuts of beef, pork, and lamb like a surgeon. John was drawn to vocal music, singing hymns as a choir member at Masses in the Latin Rite before Vatican II, for Msgr. Peter Lynch, at St. Francis de Sales Church, from 1955 to the mid 1960s. John humbly lent his voice as a cantor at Masses for periods in the 1970s - 1990s; and when clergy and organists requested him as vocal soloist for a significant number of weddings and funerals during that same period. John enters into eternal rest, following his wife Mary Ann; his siblings: Paddy, Peter, Martin, Bernard, Mary, and Annie Neeson, of Dumbarton; Nora Turnbull, of Queensferry, Scotland; and Bridgette Walsh, of Preston, England. John is survived by son Thomas S. Walsh of Riverside, California; two daughters: Stephanie Ann Walsh-Holt, of Houston, Texas; and Maureen O'Malley Walsh, of Los Angeles. Roman Catholic services are planned at St. Francis de Sales Church, 4268 Lime St., Riverside, California, on Tuesday, January 26, 2016. Viewing from 6:00 - 8:00p.m.; with a Rosary at 7:00p.m. There will be a 2nd Viewing at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, January 27, 2016, at St. Francis de Sales Church; followed by a concelebrated Mass of Resurrection, at 11:30 am. Interment will be at Riverside National Cemetery, following by an escorted caravan from the church to Staging Area 8, by 1:31 p.m. To celebrate John Walsh's life, friends and acquaintances may meet one another and the Walsh Family in St. Francis de Sales Church's parish hall, following the Catholic Burial Rite at Riverside National Cemetery.
