John Robert "Jack" Walchli Obituary
JOHN "JACK" ROBERT WALCHLI Age 90, passed away quietly at home in Murrieta, September 17, 2012. His loving wife and family were by his side. Jack was born in Lakewood, Ohio on January 21, 1922. He attended Rocky River High School in Rocky River Ohio. Received a merit scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania from which he graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1943. He served as President of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. Jack served on active duty in the US Navy, Pacific Theater from 1943-1946, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Jr. Grade. While in the Navy he participated in the Battle of Okinawa and survived a Kamikaze attack that destroyed his ship. Following WWII he worked in Ohio, Illinois and Georgia before settling in Southern California in 1958, where he spent his career in engineering and technical marketing and sales. He eventually became an executive in the aerospace industry during the height of the space race. With a business partner he founded his own company Enviropak, Inc. in El Segundo in 1971. Among other products, Enviropak designed and manufactured protective covers for the shipment of aerospace components, including portions of the space shuttle and the lunar landing modules. Designing the covers for the space shuttle was one of the highlights of Jack's career. Jack was granted a U.S. patent for his design of a specialized zipper fastener. Jack was a longtime member of L.A. Rotary. He was an avid golfer and a member of Palos Verdes Golf Club for many years and later at Bear Creek Golf Club where he resided until his death. Jack shared his love of golfing with his family. His grandchildren fondly remember that he would take them for rides in his golf cart occasionally allowing them to drive. Preceded in death by his parents Edward Walchli and Edith Bowles Walchli. Jack is survived by his brother Edward Walchli; sister Barbara Austinson; wife Wendy; daughters Jane Ann Calhoun and Suzanne Brant Walchli; son-in-law Gordon Calhoun; grandchildren Andrew Calhoun, Megan Calhoun; four stepchildren and five step grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by family and friends. A celebration of Jack's life will be held at 1pm, Saturday, October 6th at Bear Creek Golf Club.
