John W. Bloom Jr. Obituary
JOHN W. BLOOM, JR. Age 76, passed away Monday, December 21, 2015 at 8:00 a.m. at Lafayette General Medical Center in Lafayette, LA due to complications from a triple heart bypass surgery. John was born in Montour County, PA to John W. Bloom and Mildred Laubaugh Bloom. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Air Force from 1957-1962. He served the City of Corona in California as a member of the Fire Department for more than 28 years, retiring as a Battalion Chief in 1990. John started his tenure with the City of Corona as a firefighter in 1962 and moved quickly through the ranks until his promotion to Battalion Chief (BC) 7 years later in 1969, a position held for over 20 years. While serving as BC, John assumed the responsibilities of Fire Marshal, assisting in the development of the City's Fire Prevention Bureau and the City's Fire Investigation Program. He negotiated a fire investigation contract with a private investigation company, which later resulted in a reduction in the city's arson fires and increased fire investigation arrests and convictions. In addition, he developed an emergency medical program and enlisted Goodhew Ambulance Company to work on a joint paramedic program with the City. John was a member of the Corona Firefighters Association, the Riverside County Fire Chiefs Association and the California Conference of Arson Investigators. Through his participation in these organizations, John brought distinction to the City of Corona. He was also a member of the Louisiana Bayou State Corvette Club and the American Legion. He had lived in Sunset, LA since 2007. Prior to that he resided in Lake Havasu City, AZ and lived in Corona, CA for approximately 40 years. John was an avid NASCAR and Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and community. Survivors include his wife, Karen, and daughters, Marti Miles of Vilnius, Lithuania, Amy Van Hulten of Yucca Valley, CA and Amanda Linck of Carencro, LA. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Mitzi Bloom of York, PA and his eight grandchildren: Eli, Glori, Sophi, Kyle, Paige, Clara, Gavin and Holden.
