Johnny Leroy Morgan Sommers Obituary

Born in Atchison, Kansas on March 10, 1942. John was the second of seven children born to Verdell Sommers (Butzbach) and Dennis Sommers. John enlisted in the Navy and served proudly for his country from 1960-1962. He developed and operated Sommers and Sons Construction with his sons from 1979 to 2004 and currently Tomahawk Builders, Inc. His construction career spanned 57 years. He met the love of his life, Millie, while in the service. They married on September 16, 1960 and they were blessed with 56 years of a loving marriage and three children.
In John's early years, he was heavily involved at Harbor City Little League as a coach from 1969-1977. He was instrumental in recruiting young youth from the projects regardless of their finances. He wanted every kid to have the opportunity to play and learn the fundamentals and discipline of baseball. John was an avid golfer as well, with a very low handicap and scores to impress. He had been approached as a younger man to turn pro by different sponsors, but his priority always centered around his young family. Many friends would later challenge him but he always prevailed. He was an all-around sports enthusiast who loved watching his favorite teams such as the Angels, USC Trojans, Lakers and in earlier years the Dodgers and of course plenty of golf.
John is survived by his wife, Mildred Sommers; sons, Tom (Mayda), Tim (April); brothers, Denny (Angela), Ron (Caran); sister Joyce (Jim), and Jim Sommers. John has (9) grandchildren, Matt, Larissa, Savannah, Tony (Taryn), Jessica, Brian (Amanda), Domnick, Tiffany, Joe and (6) great grandchildren, Brianna, Piper, Madison, Amelia, Nolan and Jude. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Laurie Sommers Cope; Brother, Carl; mother, Verdell Butzbach and father, Dennis Sommers. Ironically and sadly his youngest sister, Patty Sommers passed away a few hours after him.
A military funeral to honor John for his service will be held. Please join us to honor his exemplary life.
Service at Pierce Brothers Crestlawn Mortuary Chapel, August 18, 10:00AM sharp, 11500 Arlington Avenue, Riverside. Buriel at Riverside National Cemetery ,22495 Van Buren Blvd., Riverside.
