Josephine Scarano Obituary
JOSEPHINE THERESA SCARANO (nee Steffano) was called home to our Heavenly Father, March 1, 2015, in Riverside Community Hospital surrounded by her family. The eldest child of Annette (Russo) and Louis Steffano, Josephine "Jo" was born May 23, 1924 in Brooklyn, New York. During World War II she was employed by the Department of the Navy. Jo and her husband-to-be, Vincent T. Scarano, were introduced to each other by mutual friends via written correspondence. Following two years of corresponding, including debates challenging the superiority of Jo's Brooklyn Dodgers versus Vince's New York Yankees and approximately four dates, they were wed August 3, 1946. Jo was a homemaker and an "active duty military wife" a steadfast supportive spouse to her active duty U.S. Army Air Corps/U.S. Air Force husband, creating a home for her family at military bases where his assignments took them. A longtime Riverside resident, Jo was an active member of St. Catherine of Alexandria Parish, serving as blood bank coordinator, lector, Eucharistic minister, and in other parish ministries such as Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) and Remembering Church. Her volunteerism spirit extended into the civic community where she was engaged in Telecare, bringing comfort and assurance to the shut-in and disabled. She was preceded in death by her parents-in-law Raffaela and Michele, sisters-in-law Angelina, Marie, Anne and Lucy, brothers-in-law Vincenzo, Mike, Joe and Pete, nephew-in-law William, parents Annette and Louis, sister Phyllis, brother Corrado, niece Barbara, great-grandson, Nathan Jr. and beloved daughter Kristine. Jo is survived by husband Vince; five children, Stephen J. (Amelie), Robert L. (Trish), Kathryn M, Michael (Monica), and Teresa T, nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, brother Louis (Dorothy), three nephews and two nieces. Jo's fervent spirit and enormous generosity of heart far outweighed her diminutive physical stature and will be missed greatly. Mass will be celebrated at St. Catherine of Alexandria Church, Riverside, Friday, March 27, 10:30am, followed by interment at Riverside National Cemetery at 12:45pm. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Kristine M. Scarano Memorial Endowed Fund for the Botanic Gardens at UCR(951-784-6962) or the Society of St Vincent de Paul.(951-684-7386) Arrangements entrusted to the care of Acheson and Graham.
