Judith Esther Richardson Obituary
JUDITH ESTHER RICHARDSON - BESS January 23, 1924 - July 2, 2016 My mother is now with her Lord and Savior. She lived a full, if rather hard, life. She leaves two younger brothers, two of her three children, six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren to remember her. My mother, born on a farm in Puerto Rico, came to New York as a very young lady. As a young woman she moved with her two first children to California, wed and had her third child. My mother was a member and supporter of the Lutheran church her whole life, she was part of the effort to create the California Lutheran College in Thousand Oaks and though never a woman of means she provided funds for scholarships and stayed active in the business of the school where her youngest daughter would eventually graduate. She was always very proud of her youngest daughter, nurtured her career in classical music and service to the church. She relished the opportunities of her last couple of years to see and play with her grand and great-grandchildren. My mother loved to travel and for a number of years she lived full-time in a motor-home, seeing the whole of the United States, most of Canada, and much of Baja California. She relished learning as much as she could about everywhere she visited. She loved and was an avid square and round dancer. For many years my mother willingly accepted the challenges and responsibility of the matriarch of her immediate family. She traveled to Puerto Rico and spent many months searching for and documenting the births, deaths, and family history that would have been mostly lost due to the lack of formal birth records. She located and documented all the records and registrations of nearly three generations of her ancestors while traveling to all the small townships and villages of her homeland. Her own birth was November 22, 1923, but her registration at the local church established her legal birthday as January 23, 1924. Her efforts to document the family tree continued till very recently and her family history files are extensive. Puerto Rican/Hispanic families are notoriously large and ours is quite typical. Judith's mother had five surviving children but herself was one of sixteen. There are many many branches and lots of family who loved and respected my mother and she will be missed by us all. A Celebration of Life service for Judith Esther Richardson-Bess will be held on Saturday, July 23 at 10:30 AM at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 1 W. Avenida de los Arboles, Thousand Oaks, CA 91360. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Judith's name to the following non-profit organizations: Los Robles Master Chorale: 2245 First Street #208, Simi Valley, CA 93065; or Holy Trinity Lutheran Church: 1 W Avenida de los Arboles, Thousand Oaks CA 93021.
