Junji Kumamoto Ph.D. Obituary
JUNJI KUMAMOTO, Ph.D. of Riverside, CA, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on August 7, 2016 at the age of 92. He was born in Sacramento, CA, served in the United States Armed Forces during World War II earning the rank of staff sergeant and then graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles and earned a Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of Chicago. His professional career included work at Shell Oil Company, IBM and as a Research Chemist at the University of California, Riverside for 30 years. He was committed to community service, earning numerous awards from community organizations and serving as a founding member of the Riverside Chapter of the JACL. His commitment to education was reflected in his service as a member of the California Curriculum Commission during the early 1970's and as a presenter of educational programs for High School students focusing on Japanese-American internment during World War II. He was a long time pitching coach and mentor to students at Rubidoux High School, Jurupa Valley High School, and Cal Baptist University. In 1977, he was the Manager of the Riverside Colt League All-Star team, and competed in the World Series, placing second. When not pursuing his other interests, he was an inspired duplicate bridge player, a passionate gardener and student of fruits, and the man who could repair anything. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Katherine Kumamoto; his children Carol (Ralph), Don (Peggy), Andrew (Grace) and Paul (Lynnette); 8 grandchildren; his brothers Arthur and Kiyoshi Kumamoto. He was lovingly cared for by Catalino Pascual, his devoted caregiver. Private memorial services will be held at a later date. The family suggests that donations in his memory be made to the (https://donatenow.heart.org/), to the Riverside Chapter of the JACL (www.riversidejacl.org) or to Jurupa Valley High School Baseball (10551 Bellegrave Ave., Jurupa Valley, CA 91752).
