Kay Burns Obituary
KAY BURNS, 72, of Sun City, CA, passed away on October 25, 2014 from complications due to leukemia. She was born Alix Kay Miller in McMinnville, Oregon to parents Alex Miller and Fern Webster Miller on November 12, 1941. While still a toddler she moved to Downey, CA where she met her life long friend Anna-Mari Embrey who held her hand as she passed on Saturday. Their friendship spanned 70 years. An intensely artistic and expressive woman, she pursued music with a passion during her teen years in the Lutheran Church. She was enrolled in the highly regarded USC music program and graduated with honors while honing her skill and talent to become an outstanding soprano. Instead of seeking a professional career, she shared her gifts with her three daughters and, for over 20 years with the Santa Ana School District where she worked as a music teacher. 20 years proved too short a time to share such a gift, so she continued her work teaching as an owner of Montessori schools with her partner and husband Michael Burns. Kay and Michael were married for 38 years this December. Kay came from a strong line of women. She grew up working in her mother's flower shops where she learned to make beautiful arrangements, bows and decorative items. Her friends and family enjoyed her beautifully wrapped packages and gifts for years to come. That strength was passed to her three daughters who all went on to successful careers in every corner of the country. She gave much of herself to her family and is survived by her husband Michael Burns and her three daughters Heather Burns McCaffrey, Celeste Burns Edman, and Cheynette Brennan. Her family grew to include 3 sons-in-law, Scott McCaffrey, Todd Edman, Ric Brennan, four grandchildren, Avery McCaffrey, Steven and Lyra Edman, and Adam Idhe. Her extended family includes her sister and brother-in-law, Donna and Al Broward and their children and grandchildren, David Broward, Sandy, Mile, Brandon and Brittany Mindt. Memorial Services will be held at Faith Lutheran Church in Sun City, CA on Wednesday, October 29, 2014 at 1pm.
