Kenneth L. Edwards Obituary
KENNETH L. EDWARDS November 24, 1930 - February 4, 2016 Kenneth L. Edwards passed into heaven peacefully on February 4, 2016 surrounded by his family. Ken was born in Lafayette, Indiana, the youngest of four children. He earned a B.S. degree in civil engineering from Valparaiso University in 1952, where he met his future wife, Marilyn. Ken and Marilyn were married on August 31, 1951, and enjoyed over 64 years of married life together. Ken worked in Chicago after graduation, and in 1953 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He graduated from Officer's Candidate School, and was stationed in Long Beach and then Honolulu from 1953 - 1956, where he was assigned to the U.S.S. Fletcher, and rose to the rank of Lieutenant J.G. After discharge from the Navy, Ken and Marilyn and their daughter, Cheryl, moved to Southern California. They had three more children - John, Paul and James. Ken earned Master's Degrees in Civil Engineering and Public Administration from USC. Ken worked for two engineering firms and the Army Corps of Engineers until 1962, when he went to work for the Riverside County Flood Control and Water Conservation District. He spent 34 years with the Flood Control District and served as the General Manager-Chief Engineer from 1978 until his retirement in 1996. During that time, the District experienced phenomenal growth in staff, over $230 million in flood control projects completed, the introduction of computerized design of survey maps, and construction of two new office buildings. The City of Palm Springs designated May 24, 1991 as Kenneth L. Edwards Day in honor of his work on the Tahquitz Creek dam and flood channel. The district office was re-named the Kenneth L. Edwards Flood Control Building in his honor. Ken enjoyed boating at Lake Powell, the Colorado River, and Lake Havasu. He and Marilyn and their children often vacationed at their lake-front home at Havasu Springs Resort, Arizona, where they enjoyed boating and spending time together. He was a long-time member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and served as an elder and president. Ken is survived by his wife, Marilyn; daughter Cheryl Edwards Tannenberg, her husband John; son Paul Edwards, his wife Arlene, and four grandchildren, Bryan, Karissa, Ryan and Steven. Ken's sons, John and Jim, predeceased him in 1974 and 2007. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, February 20, 2016 at 11:30 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 5455 Alessandro Blvd., Riverside, CA 92506.
