Kristen Robinson Olsen Obituary
KRISTEN ROBINSON OLSEN April 19, 1968 - September 3, 2015 Kristen (Kristi) Robinson Olsen was born on April 19, 1968 to Jim and Shirley Robinson. At an early age, Kristi had a passion for the sun and the water. Growing up in Seal Beach, California, she spent many days with friends at the beach soaking up the sun. When her family moved to Riverside in 1981, 50 miles from the beach, she quickly traded in sand for the nearest swimming pool. Kristi was an amazing athlete and excelled at anything she put her mind to: AYSO soccer, tennis, swimming, or the annual trips to Yosemite that shaped her into the most graceful skier. She loved any activity in the sun, and found her first job as a lifeguard at Victoria Country Club where she could spend an entire summer around the pool and close to her friends. She continued that passion for swimming and tennis when she attended Poly High School and graduated in 1986. In 1990, she graduated from Claremont McKenna College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations. She continued her education and earned an MBA from Claremont Graduate University in 1995. Kristi became passionate about the law in graduate school as it enabled her to help others so she moved to Sacramento, California where she attended McGeorge School of Law and graduated with a Juris Doctorate in 1998. It was in Sacramento where she met her husband, Craig Olsen. Craig and Kristi moved back to Riverside to build their careers and were married in 1999. Kristi was hired by the law firm of Varner and Brandt, and she concentrated in the area of civil litigation where she felt she could make the most impact fighting for others. Her innate compassion led her to Olive Crest as she found enthusiasm helping abused and at-risk-children. In 2008 Kristi joined a group of friends and participated in the Susan G. Komen 60 mile walk to fight breast cancer. She was instrumental starting "Black Tie Bowling" benefiting Olive Crest and the annual event continues today. She also was involved with the Loma Linda Children's Hospital Guild where she helped raise funds for "Big Hearts for Little Hearts." While her career and philanthropy were important, nothing was more important than putting her family first. Craig and Kristi welcomed their daughter Mallory Jean Olsen in 2003. Mallory held a very special place in Kristi's heart and is truly her "mini me." Kristi lost her mother at age 14, so knew the value of spending quality time with her family. When her father Jim married Barbara in 1986, Kristi would say "I have been so blessed to have two wonderful mothers in my life." Kristi was the driving spirit behind getting the Robinson family together for a "weekly Sunday night dinner" that allowed the family to connect and remain close despite their busy individual lives. Kristi was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006 and while the entire family knew her resolve, she personified her warrior attitude to combat the disease. Kristi dyed her hair hot pink to make her first public statement, as an attorney, raising eyebrows while making legal appearances. The judge questioned her "hot pink" hair color and she simply replied "Because I have cancer" which silenced the courtroom. Kristi was first to say that "wigs were for whimps" and was empowered by being bald and the statement it made. She showed utmost determination to fight despite being diagnosed four times over the past nine years. She fought with courage and never showed an ounce of weakness. She was quick to let doctors know she had a "kick ass cape" and to never give up hope. Kristi lost her battle with cancer on September 3, 2015 surrounded by family. She left this world knowing she was deeply loved and enjoyed so many visitors in her final weeks. Kristi is survived by her husband, Craig Olsen and daughter Mallory Olsen; her parents, Jim and Barbara Robinson, and a brother Jamie (Melissa) Robinson, all from Riverside. The family will celebrate her life at the home of Jim and Barbara Robinson, 2741 Rumsey Drive, Riverside on September 25, 2015 at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation be made in her honor to Olive Crest Safe Kids Fund, 555 Technology Ct., Suite 300, Riverside, California 92507 or The Mary S. Roberts Pet Adoption Center, 6165 Industrial Ave., Riverside, CA 92504.
