L. JOHN MUNOA was born in May of 1927 in Vista, California to Juan Munoa and Applena Crawford. He grew up in Temecula, California, attending Temecula Union School and then Elsinore High School, lettering in basketball and football. He joined the Merchant Marine in 1945, and when the war ended, he returned to finish his senior year of high school. In 1949, John married Louise Stokes, and adopted her two daughters, Judith and Ruth. John and Louise had 5 more children and raised them in Temecula, Elsinore, San Diego, and North Hollywood. He worked from the time he was 13 years old at Knott's Garage in Temecula, and eventually bought the shop from Mr. Knott. He worked as a Chevrolet mechanic at Lakeside Chevrolet in Elsinore, California, becoming a Corvair expert for that unique model of car. He was known for innovation and improvisation in automotive work. He continued to advise on race car fabrication into his 80s. He and Louise owned and operated the garage, towing and ambulance in Temecula for many years. In 1967 John went to work for Cal Trans as a mechanic and rose through the ranks to be an executive, operating the facility maintaining state vehicles in the San Diego region. He is known to many as "Bishop Munoa", having served as the lay-pastor of a congregation of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the Clairemont suburb of San Diego, from 1977 to 1984. During that time he influenced many people and encouraged all to come to Christ. John was an elder of the Pechanga Band of Luise¤o Indians, and after his retirement from Cal Trans, served as the tribal water commissioner for many years. His wife of 54 years, Louise passed away in 2003. After her passing, John married Paralee Stokes Raborn in 2007. They have lived in Temecula. John was preceded in death by his wife Louise Munoa, his daughter-in-law Jan Munoa, granddaughter Marie Pinson, and great-granddaughter Elise Munoa. He is survived by his wife, Paralee Munoa, his children, Judith Munoa, Ruth Odekirk (Virgil), Robert Munoa (Janice), James Munoa (LouAnn), Philip Munoa (Candace), John Munoa (Marissa) and Mary Pinson (Brett). He is beloved by his posterity of many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
