Lawrence "Larry" Kleven Obituary
Larry Kleven passed away at the age of 90 on October 23, 2017, due to complications following surgery. Larry grew up in the north woods of Wisconsin, the third son of Torger and Marie Kleven. The family, including his younger brother and sister, lived in a log cabin until his father, a carpenter who had emigrated from Norway, built a house that remains in the family to this day. As they got older, Larry and his brothers worked for Torger building homes around the Long Lake area where they lived.
After graduating from high school in June 1945, Larry served a stint in the Navy before getting a degree in vocational arts from Stout State Institute. There he met Lila Nelson, and they were married shortly after graduating together in 1950. Larry and Lila had two children, Paul and Gail. Larry taught wood shop at high schools in Minnesota and Wisconsin until the family moved to Riverside, CA in 1961, where he taught industrial arts at Central Junior High School for the next twenty-eight years. He liked getting to potential woodworkers at a younger age, before they developed any unfortunate habits.
Larry did as well as taught, making beautiful pieces of furniture and clever toys for his family and friends. Generous with his time and talents, he crafted many items for Hope Lutheran Church, and into his late eighties helped to feed the homeless and others in need through Hope's program with the Path of Life Ministry. Larry was an excellent bowler, regularly recording the high season average in the teachers' bowling league, and water skied until he was in his seventies. He enjoyed traveling, playing cards, and sharing a good joke with friends and family. Larry was a gentle, compassionate and selfless soul who always made those around him feel safe, accepted and loved.
Larry was preceded in death by Lila, his beloved wife of nearly forty-eight years. He is survived by his son Paul (Elisa), his daughter Gail (Tom), his grandchildren Andrew (Yvonne), Todd (Courtney), Scott (Carly), Mia and Ben, his great-grandchildren Isaac and Joseph, his brother David, and numerous nephews and nieces. He is also survived by Trudy, who provided loving companionship for the last seventeen years of his life.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 18, 2017 at two in the afternoon, at Hope Lutheran Church, 2882 Arlington Avenue, Riverside, California 92506. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Hope or to Path of Life, www.thepathoflife.com
