Lawrence was born in Upland, California in 1929 to Ross and Christena Stilwell. He was raised in Ontario, California where he met his neighbor and childhood sweetheart, Virginia Marie Stilwell, and married ten days after she graduated high school. They moved to Turlock, California where they owned a dairy farm and had their first two children, David and Paul. Lawrence began working for Southern California Edison as a truck driver and grounds man, which moved the family to Apple Valley. Their third child, Christy, was born in Apple Valley. In 1960 Lawrence began working as a lineman for Edison and the family moved to Hemet, CA where they resided for 56 years. Lawrence was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as a youth group leader, a deacon, and on the church board. He was known throughout the community as a family man. He loved to spend time camping, boating, hiking, fishing, bird watching - essentially any outside activity that he could enjoy with his family. He enjoyed raising horses and cattle.
