Lt. Col. Everett Walter Yates Jr. Obituary
LT. COL. EVERETT WALTER YATES, JR. U.S. Army (ret) Age 84, of Riverside, California left this life on January 20, 2016. He was born June 18, 1931 in Los Angeles, California to Everett Walter Yates and Cleo Mona Pearson. He died quietly at home after a lengthy illness, with his wife of 53 years at his side. He served 22 years in the United States Army including two tours in Vietnam. He received two Bronze Star medals for meritorious service in a combat zone, the Army Commendation medal and a number of other awards. While in the Army, he completed the Engineer Officer Career Course and the Contract Construction and Procurement Management Course. He then worked 30 years as a Civil Engineer in surveying and construction inspection. He worked on many public works projects around Southern California including Prado Regional Park, Mojave Narrows Regional Park, one wing of Eisenhower Medical Center, and numerous SoCal Edison company projects and public schools. He was always calm in a crisis. Whether a family member became suddenly ill, or he came upon an auto accident or in any other incident, he could rapidly assess the situation and provide aid. In later years he was the grandpa with the bicycle pump who could always inflate bike tires or basketballs. Stray or lost cats in distress would find him and stay, assured of food, shelter, medical care and affection. He is survived by his wife Lori Yates of Riverside, California; a brother James Yates of Garden Grove, California; a sister Bettye Troeller of Exeter, California; son Stephen Yates; three daughters Janice West, Nancy Yates-Williams and Katherine Yates; daughter-in-law Diana Yates; 8 grandchildren: Adriana, Helen, Evan, Rebecca, Kyle, Patrick, Jacqueline and Gregory, and one great-granddaughter: Piper Rae. A memorial service will be held at Harvest Christian Fellowship in Riverside on January 30, 2016 at 10:00 am. Interment will be at Riverside National Cemetery on February 2. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to the Mary S. Roberts Pet Adoption Center: www.petsadoption.com Arrangements Entrusted to the Care of 9695 Magnolia Ave., Riverside, CA 92503 (951) 785-4071.
