Margaret Jeanne Thornburg Obituary
Margaret Jeanne (Welty) Thornburg passed away on April 12, 2017. Jeanne was born in Orange, California, on October 4, 1928, to Waldo and Hazel Welty. She grew up in Orange with her brother Harold, sister Janet, and twin sister Joanne.
She graduated from Orange High School and attended Santa Ana College (now Rancho Santiago). She was the Sports Editor of the college paper, and was sent to interview the captain of the football team. Three months later, Jeanne and Jim Thornburg were married. They lived in Riverside with their three daughters, where Jim was a teacher and principal. Jeanne worked at UC Riverside, and retired in 1989 as the manager of the Contract and Grant Administration Office. Jim passed away in 1982.
Jeanne married Walt Selufsky, her counterpart at UC Irvine, in 1987. They moved to Rancho Bernardo, then to Mission Viejo. They enjoyed bridge, lawn bowling, gardening, and road trips to visit Walt's family in upstate New York. Walt passed away in 2013.
Her three daughters survive Jeanne: Cynthia (Paul) Moriconi, Jane Collier, and Julia (Thierry) Montoya. Her stepchildren, Lorraine (Jeff) Kilpatrick and Gary (Mary) Selufsky, survive her. Her eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also survive Jeanne. Her husbands, James R. Thornburg and Walter Selufsky, predeceased her.
Jeanne's family wish to thank the staff at Park Terrace in Rancho Santa Margarita who cared for her with great thoughtfulness and kindness the last few years, and Seacrest Hospice for their compassionate assistance over the last week.
Graveside services will be held at Riverside National Cemetery on Tuesday, April 18, at 1:00 pm.
