Maria Furtado Lasater Obituary
MARIA FURTADO LASATER Maria "Mary" Furtado Lasater passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday, Sept. 27, 2013. She had just celebrated her 94th birthday. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Lasater, of Riverside, in July 1978; her son, John L. Lasater, of Riverside, in December 2012; and her son, Wallace C. Lasater, of Poulsbo, Washington, in January 2013. She is survived by her daughter, Dee Bettinger (Jim), of Palo Alto, California; her son Cliff Lasater (Linda), of Malibu; and her daughter, Geneve Armstrong (Ken), of Bedford, Ohio. Mary has 14 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Maria Furtado was born in Fall River, Massachusetts, on Sept. 9, 1919. She was raised there and later in New Jersey, where she was living when she met John, a young sailor in the U.S. Navy. Mary loved to travel. Her travels began in 1936 when John brought his teenage bride from New Jersey to Riverside to meet his parents and his eight brothers and sisters. They started their family in 1938 and travels continued with kids in tow to wherever John was stationed: Brooklyn, Long Beach, and Memphis, back to California and on to Hawaii. In later years Mary and John enjoyed travel together all over Europe, including Russia, Spain, Germany and Portugal, as well as to Hong Kong and the Philippines. After John's death in 1978, Mary continued traveling with friends and family to Singapore, Australia, Germany wherever she found a travel bargain. She was a fun-loving adventurer. Her travels even extended to hopping on a bus and visiting friends or family wherever they might be. Her travels ended in 2007 when she suffered a stroke in her home in Oceanside. When it became apparent that she could no longer live alone, her family moved her to Raincross of Riverside, where she remained until her death. Mary was a strong and independent woman with a great laugh. She was a loving and generous wife, mother and friend, and she will truly be missed. The family wants to thank Vitas Hospice and "Aunt Mary" Snyder, her sister-in-law of 78 years. The family deeply appreciates the efforts of the staff and caregivers at Raincross of Riverside, where her care was exceptional. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in her memory to the or the . Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, October 4, at Pierce Brothers Crestlawn Memorial Park and Mortuary, 11500 Arlington Ave., Riverside, California.
