Maria Sorich Obituary
MARIA SORICH, a long-time Moreno Valley, CA resident and educator, passed away peacefully in her sleep on September 29, 2016. Born in 1921 in Youngstown, OH and raised in Gary, IN. After graduating high school, Maria received a scholarship to the Goodman Art Institute of Chicago and became a professional stage actress. While attending the Institute, she met her husband-to-be, John Sorich, who served as a combat medic in WWII and continued in the Air Force for more than 30 years. A devoted wife and mother, later in life she received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education from University of California Riverside in 1970, where she also earned her Teaching credential, working as a substitute teacher in the Moreno Valley and Colton School Districts. She continued her education at the University of Redlands, from which she received her Masters Degree in Speech Therapy in 1973. She then served as a Speech Therapist in the Colton School District until 1987 when she retired. Maria's passions were teaching and helping others. She taught English as a Second Language classes at various high schools and colleges overseas and in the Inland Empire area for more than 35 years. Maria was very proud of being an educator and her Grecian heritage. She loved good food and Greek music, and enjoyed performing in plays throughout her life. She had an energetic nature, powerful voice and a wonderful smile that really lit up wherever she went. She is survived by her two sons: John J. Sorich III (Barbara) of Eden Prairie, MN & Michael Sorich (Janice) of Burbank, CA, Lorraine Sorich of Eden Prairie, MN, her 5 wonderful grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren whom all brought her great joy. Maria will be laid to rest next to her husband of 49 years, Msgt. John J. Sorich Jr., at Riverside National Cemetery November 21st.
