Marie Langer Obituary
MARIE LANGER
Marie Langer passed away on July 20, 2017 in Laguna Niguel, California, peacefully, just 10 days before her 92nd birthday. She was surrounded by her family when she left this earth.
Marie Mur Langer was born in Paris July 30, 1925 to Manuel and Monsserat Cos Mur.
Marie's parents immigrated to France from the Catalonia region of Northern Spain. Marie grew up in the village of Brignon, France. There she completed her schooling and later went to work in Nimes as a maid for a wealthy family to help support her family. It is from this job that Marie acquired her knowledge of cooking. Her culinary talent became so extraordinary that it would be celebrated and remembered by anyone lucky enough to be invited to share a meal.
After World War II had begun, Marie left for Dijon to escape the German occupation. Marie journeyed through Spain and into Morocco during which time she was not heard from by friends and family for approximately two years. It is suspected that during this time Marie worked with the French Resistance to further the cause of liberation.
Marie had always been a woman of secrets. She was a woman from a time that both honored and required secrecy in a way that later generations may or may not understand. While in Dijon, this stunningly beautiful young woman met a handsome American soldier named Joseph A. Langer. Though Joseph knew little French, his acquisition of the language increased rapidly as he sought to court Marie. He won her heart for they were wed and their first child, Maria, was born in Lyon. France.
Shortly after the war ended, Joe Langer stayed on after the war to manage PX stores for the US Army in Germany where they moved with Maria. In 1948 they returned to Joseph's native Iowa, USA. There they had two sons, first Joe and then Marc. Joseph enrolled in Drake University while Marie dutifully tended to her children and worked as a waitress to help support the family while Joe finished his education in the field of law.
After moving to Riverside, California in 1958, Marie went to business school, became a teller at a local bank, Riverside Savings and Loan, and retired in 1987 as a Comptroller with Wells Fargo Bank. She worked hard and truly earned her retirement during which she and Joe lived in CA, NV, and for a time, in Spain.
Marie treasured travel, and it has been said that it would be easier to name the places she has not visited than the places she has. Though Joseph passed in 1999, her passion to learn and experience other cultures carried on and she continued to travel with friends and loved ones. In the sunset of her life, and in addition to traveling, she enjoyed reading, her beloved pets, and spending time with her family.
Marie had a silent strength and was a steadfast woman to be sure. She was also respectful of all people and had a genuine smile that shone from her heart. She lived through unimaginably difficult times and made her way through with no passion lost for lessons learned. Those who knew her loved her and remember her fondly. She is survived by her younger brother Ray Mur; her three children Maria Mahaffey, Joe Langer, Marc Langer; nine grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. What a large and lucky group of people.
Rest in peace Marie, in God's arms until we meet again.
A memorial service will be held at Riverside National Cemetery on Friday, October 13th at 2pm at staging # 5.
