Mark Stephen Viafora Obituary
MARK STEPHEN VIAFORA passed away May 5, 2014 at Riverside Community Hospital surrounded by family members. Mark was born August 24, 1954 in Sacramento, CA, the 4th child of Ralph and Peggy Viafora. He spent the first four years of his life as a patient; first at Letterman's Army Hospital at the Presidio in San Francisco, and then at Stanford Children's Hospital. He survived congenital anomalies that were usually fatal in that era, but time and time again Mark defied the odds. One never counted Mark out. He attended St. Ignatius School in Sacramento, a loving, nurturing environment. After his father, Ralph, was transferred to March Air Force Base in Riverside, Mark attended Sunshine School and later graduated from Poly High School. He most recently resided with his mother, Peggy, at Air Force Village West. Mark was an avid sports fan. He was a die-hard Lakers and Angels supporter, enduring the derision of the Celtics and Red Sox fans in his family. One of Mark's passions was bowling, and he bowled for many years in a league at Tava Lanes. Mark was loyal, kind and loving, and very proud and supportive of his family. This love was returned in kind. For nearly 60 years, Mark was a touchstone in his family. Mark is survived by his mother, Peggy; brothers Paul (Joanne) and John (Mary); sisters Anne Moreau (Steve) and Mary Blevins (Tim); 12 nieces and nephews, and a great-niece and great-nephew. His father Ralph preceded him in death in 2012. Mark will be sorely missed by those who knew and loved him. We are heartbroken at his passing. The family would like to thank his many friends at AFVW and the nurses and doctors who cared for him at RCH. Memorial service to be announced at a future date.
