Martha Louise Sheehy Obituary
MARTHA LOUISE SHEEHY Martha Louise Sheehy passed away on Jan. 4, 2014 at her home in Riverside. She was 92 years old. Martha (Marty) was born on July 29th, 1921 in Pocatello, Idaho into a family of six children. In 1939, Marty graduated from Pocatello High School and went on to attend Iowa State University, receiving a degree in Nutrition and Dietetics in 1943. After working briefly at Children's Hospital in San Francisco as a dietician, in 1946, Marty married her husband of sixty years, John Sheehy; the couple lived in Salt Lake City, Seattle and Santa Monica before finally settling in Riverside. Marty and John raised five children Joe, Pat, Tim, Mary and Tom. Marty was an active member of the First Methodist Church and was involved with POE and AAUW. In later years she explored Tai Chi, Bible studies and select book clubs. Marty was beloved for her many talents and sense of humor. She was an excellent cook, a natural story teller and collector of humorous anecdotes, a champion of classical music and piano lessons, an unofficial advisor to physicians and wayward motorists, a devotee of higher education, a "professional worrier" who shared her midnight epiphanies with all in her sphere. Marty's effortless social skills were used in becoming a friend, mentor, and benefactor to those who came within her orbit. Her special form of genius was to recognize the talents of others and to cheer them on, providing an unwavering edifice of support; regarding herself, she was notoriously modest. Marty's life was a continuous labor of love for her family and friends. To know her was to be the lucky recipient of her bountiful generosity, her insatiable curiosity, her ubiquitous care and concern, her offbeat suggestions, her unsolicited, albeit well-intentioned advice, her humorous stories and remarks, along with her laughter. Her luminous presence will continue to resonate through those that knew and will not forget her. She is survived by her children, many grand and great grandchildren. Services will be at the First United Methodist Church of Riverside, on Monday, January 13 @ 11:00a.m. with a reception following.
