Mary Allena McMahan Obituary
MARY ALLENA MCMAHAN Friends and family will celebrate the life of longtime Riverside resident, Mary McMahan with a simple graveside service at Crestlawn Memorial Park on Friday, Dec. 5. Mary was born in Tecumseh, Oklahoma on April 30, 1929 where she grew up a typical small town girl, marrying her childhood sweetheart, Donald C. McMahan in May 1948. She was the younger of two sisters with three brothers, Cecil Bernard, who was a lifelong cowboy, Johnny, the next older brother who left the small town to join the navy for a few years, and her favorite younger brother, Tommy, also a horseman and jack of all trades. Inspired by her hardworking mother, Georgia, Mary was never one to sit home idle. She graduated from Tecumseh High School in 19xx and spent a couple of years in southern California with friends of the family before returning to Oklahoma and marrying Don. The couple lived briefly in Kansas City, KS but moved back to Oklahoma after a major flood. There, they started their family and in 1959 like so many "Okies" had in the dustbowl years earlier, packed up the trailer and their two boys, Don and Danny, and headed west to California. With her husband engaged mostly in construction work they moved around a lot including a short year in Denver, Colorado, where they tried their hand at running a Winchell's donut shop. According to the boys they lived in no less than 13 homes and finally settled in Riverside, California since 1966. A loving mother, a hard worker, and always with a great sense of humor, Mary retired from Thrifty Drugstore after 25 years. Mary was an active member of the Faith Community Church for over 30 years. Both she and Don were very involved in the fundraising for the church in their numerous rummage sales. Both she and her husband were avid bowlers and she continued bowling for many years after her husband passed in 1997. She is survived by her brother Tommy Bernard, her two sons & daughters-in-law, five grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. She will be dearly missed.
