Mary Isobel Welch Obituary
Mary died February 26, 2017 at her home. Mrs. Welch was born in Glasgow, Scotland on February 28, 1931. She was predeceased by her parents, John and Jane (McCabe) Cassels and her only brother, David Cassels. She was raised in Scotland and, after high school, attended the Royal Scottish Academy of Music, earning degrees from the Royal Academy of Music (L.R.A.M.) and Trinity College of .Music (L.T.C.L.) both in London, England. She earned a teaching credential from Glasgow Teachers College and taught voice in the Glasgow school system. Mrs. Welch was a leading Soprano in Glasgow Cathedral Choir for 6 years and a professional singer in several churches in Canada and the United States. She sang in various Choral groups locally, most recent being the Raincross Chorale.
In 1955 she married Gordon A. Welch of Toronto, Canada. They lived in two Provinces and several States before settling in Riverside in 1969. Gordon passed away in 1989. In addition to singing, Mary was an avid golfer. She belonged to Canyon Crest Country Club for 30 years and later to the Victoria Club. She had several other hobbies and was active at Calvary Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Welch is survived by her daughter, Leslie Welch of Riverside; son Alan (and Cathy) Welch of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and son Brian of Riverside. Also survived by three grandchildren, Angela and Stephen Cuomo of Riverside and William Welch of Ann Arbor.
Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at 2pm at Calvary Presbyterian Church, 4495 Magnolia Ave., Riverside, CA 92501. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Open Hearts for Children at Lorna Linda University Children's Hospital Foundation, Room A607, P.O. Box 2000, Lorna Linda, CA 92354 or to Calvary Presbyterian Church Music Program.
