Mary Reta Hurd Mantz Obituary
MARY RETA HURD MANTZ, died peacefully with her family near on April 12, 2016 in Sun City, California. Mary was born on April 17, 1933 in Harrington, Delaware to George and Mildred Hurd. She was the third of ten children growing up adventurous and independent in Dover with her sister Laura at her side, her family close, surviving the tragic loss of their brilliant father George who was killed at his job in 1942. A resident of Riverside, Ca since 1957, she always made a beautiful home for her family, sewing the girls matching outfits, working to support everyone and playing her piano to lull them to sleep. After the death of her first husband in 1968, she remained a hard working, devoted mother of five children and didn't slow down to complain. Ever curious about science, psychology and medicine she studied nursing and other interests at night school, desiring to give her heart to those in need of her service. Among many jobs over her lifetime, she worked at March Air Force Base procurement office as well as the base hospital. There she met her partner for life, telling her girls, "I just met the cutest guy!" Wherever Mary lived, no matter what, she planted gardens abundant enough that she sent her children to deliver bouquets to neighbors every season as her mother had done when Mary was little. During her second marriage she found more time and energy to truly express her love and talent for gardening, and for spoiling children! In the early 80's they bought The Gardeners Nursery where she taught her grandchildren to nurture life and make change for customers, letting her little helpers splatter water on themselves and on the huge rows of potted trees and bushes in the hot summertime. At home they worked acres of plain dirt into lush thriving gardens, yielding fruit, vegetables, endless flowers, lawns, trees and open fields for all the children's parties and games. She maintained a greenhouse full of exotic orchids and shared them with us all. Mary and her husband continued to care for and enjoy their growing family, take a little time for themselves traveling abroad and lead an active life in Sun City, CA after retiring. And as always they teamed up to set the standard for the best holiday cooking from her old family recipes, hand made with tons of love. Mary is survived by her devoted husband Donald Mantz; her loving children, Edward Scanlon, IV, Patrick Scanlon, Grace Scanlon, Julie Scanlon and Diane Towe; her step children Carol, Peter and Paul Mantz; adoring grandchildren Shiva, Charmain, Ryan, Serene, Kyle, Tara, James, Loren and Adam; step grandchildren and many precious great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her beloved mother Mildred, her brother Joe, sisters Sara and Betty Jane. She is also survived by her best friend sister, Laura; siblings Georgeanna, Grace, Jimmy, Jason, and Clara, and a host of nieces and nephews. Once she said, remarking on a garden that we were growing, "Its love that does it, does it all." This was her joy and hearts desire, to help love grow, no matter what. A memorial celebration service will be held tomorrow, Monday May 2 at 2pm, Evans Brown Mortuary, 27010 Encanto Dr., Sun City, CA 92585.
