Mary Rose Merritt Obituary
Age 95, loving Mother, Grandmother "Nana", Aunt, Friend passed away July 3, 2017 at Dalistan's Care Home in Ukiah, California. Rosemary was born on March 11, 1922 in Cortland, Ohio to Italian immigrant parents. The second of eight children and the eldest daughter, Rosemary was a sickly child who spent many of her younger years bed ridden with rheumatic fever and pneumonia and was homeschooled for a year and a half. As she strengthened and grew older and more children were born into the family, Rosemary was often put in charge of her younger siblings. She prided herself on being like a second mother to them. She loved each of them very much. At 19 years old, Rosemary left home after World War II started and went to Beaver County, Pennsylvania. There she took a Civil Service Examination to recruit employees at the nation's capitol, Washington D.C. She was one of only two people who passed the test and shortly thereafter was hired to work in the Department of Interior. She held many secretarial positions within the Government during her eight years in D.C. While in D.C., she met her future husband, William "Bill" Merritt. Together they relocated with a new job for Bill to Nevada and eventually settled in California. They had four children, Bonnie, Robert, John and Thomas.
Rosemary and Bill were baptized into the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Colton, California in 1956 and went on to become active members within several Adventist churches. Over the next several decades she selflessly volunteered countless hours to her church.
Rosemary was a dedicated Secretary and Office Manager for the California Teachers Association - Riverside and retired in 1987 after 22 years. She had a strong work ethic that she instilled in each of her children and grandchildren. After retiring, Rosemary shared her retirement years between Ukiah, California to live with her son, Robert and his family, and McCall, Idaho to be with her daughter, Bonnie and her family. Rosemary was active in her church in both areas and made many friends. She will be remembered as a caring and loving person who loved unconditionally. She enjoyed nothing more than to please and provide for her family. Never one to pamper herself, she was simply happy with any small kindness shown to her. She lived solely for her God, her family, and her friends. Everyone loved Rosemary. She was a true treasure and she will be dearly missed.
She is survived by her daughter, Bonnie (George); sons Robert (Debbie); and John; two daughters-in-law Diane and Shari; grandchildren Stephanie, Cori, Rick, Ashley, Kristin, Rob, Jeremy and William; and great grandchildren Caleb, Amory, Izabella, Shane, Kai and Chloe, along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, all of her siblings and beloved son, Tom.
Services will be held Monday, July 10th at 12:00 noon at Acheson and Graham Garden of Prayer Mortuary, 7944 Magnolia Avenue, Riverside. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Rosemary's name to AquAbility, a non-profit organization that is committed to developing independence and ability, enhancing health and fitness, increasing self esteem, and improving quality of life for people with disabilities.
