MERCER, MAURICE E. "BUD" Passed away at his home in Menifee, CA. at age 87. Maurice was born in Forest Grove, Oregon, grew up in Salem and graduated from Oregon State University. He loved music, played the clarinet and saxophone and had his own band during his college years. During World War II he became a Captain in the Army Engineers and for 4 years specialized in learning about and then teaching troops how to locate and disarm enemy land mines and booby traps. He also told a story of how his expertise was an entry into meeting General Eisenhower, President Roosevelt and Winston Churchill. After the war Maurice studied and taught at the L.A. Conservatory of Music earning a Master's degree in Musical Composition. In 1947 he married Anita Marie Carr in Pasadena and they were blessed with two sons, Gary and Robert Mercer. Maurice shared with them his humor and his optimism as well as his enthusiasm for sports, music and reading. He spent 35 years as a public educator teaching English and music. Much of it at Ramona High School in Riverside. He also enjoyed directing a men's choral group call "The Melody Men" for 20 years. Maurice is survived by his wife, Anita, 2 sons, Gary and Robert Mercer, daughter-in-law, Roberta Ramlow Mercer, niece, Judy Kurz of Florida, nephew, Alan Kirchoff of New Jersey and many friends. A graveside service with military honors was conducted at Riverside National Cemetery October 21, 2004, followed by burial there. Arrangements entrusted to: MILLER-JONES MORTUARY 26770 Murrieta Rd.
