Meno Truman Lake Obituary
MENO TRUMAN LAKE
August 19, 1919-March 16, 2017
Meno was born on August 19, 1919 in the small Canadian prairie town of Esterhazy, Saskatchewan to Truman and Marguerite Lake, where Truman was the Canadian Pacific Railroad station manager for many years. Meno and his siblings were raised in the house adjoining the station, and Meno recounted many adventures of riding the trains as a boy with his father's friends. The family also used their railroad privileges to discover the delights of Southern California weather during winter vacations. He lived in Esterhazy until attending the University of Manitoba, where he studied actuarial science and met the love of his long life, Jean Hancock. After graduation, Meno moved to Los Angeles, and found a job with Occidental Life Insurance as an actuarial candidate. Shortly thereafter he sent for Jean, and they were married on September 6, 1940. After his wartime stint in the Navy, they put down roots in Southern California where they raised their 5 children. He resumed his career with Occidental, which culminated with his retirement 45 years later as President and CEO. He had a lifelong love affair with his family, and with the wonders of travel. Until his health made travel impossible, he enjoyed travels throughout the country and the world with family and friends. His favorite destination was Maui, where he and Jean hosted innumerable family reunions for their children and grandchildren. All who knew Meno remember him as a man who was remarkably kind and considerate with friends, coworkers, and subordinates alike.
Meno passed on March 16, 2017 after a brief illness. He was preceded in death by Jean and by his son Ralph. He is survived by sons Bruce, William, and Rex and daughter Nora, along with 15 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. His final resting place will be at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, California. A memorial service will be held at United Methodist Church of Murrieta, California at 3:00 PM on March 26, 2017.
