MERLE MCDONALD Merle passed away on Friday, September 28, 2012. Merle was born on Feb 04, 1919 in Wewoka, Oklahoma to parents Claudis and Della McDonald. Merle was the youngest of nine children. He graduated high school at the age of 16 and came to California by train with his sister. They had traveled out to join other siblings and Merle has been here ever since. Merle went to a dance at the Majestic Ballroom at the Pike in Long Beach where he met Hellen Janiece Fox. They shared a dance that never stopped and were married within a year's time in 1939. They had 2 children, Terry and Janice. After they married they lived in Los Angeles (1 year) and then Long Beach (9 1/2 years), Lakewood (2 years), Downey (12 1/2 years), Cypress (17 years), and for the past 31 years, Sun City, California. Merle is a WWII Veteran and served in the US Army (Infantry). Following his military service, he worked in manufacturing as a maintenance supervisor. He retired from Lever Brothers in 1981. He loved bowling and golfing and had 5 hole-in-one shots over the years. He and Hellen traveled all over the world together (England, Ireland, Scotland, Egypt, Holland, China, Korea, Hawaii, Mexico, etc). Merle is survived by his beloved wife of over 73 years, Hellen J. McDonald; their daughter Janice Merle Reed; 5 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and many many great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death recently by his son Terry E. McDonald. There will be a Celebration of Merle's Life with Military Honors performed by the US Army at 2 PM on Friday, October 12, 2012 at the Riverside National Cemetery, 22495 Van Buren Blvd, Riverside, CA, 92518.
