MICHAEL D. JOYCE February 14, 1944 - February 10, 2014 Michael passed away on February 10, 2014 at the age of 69 after a long battle with pneumonia. Michael was born in Long Beach, CA and was a resident of Lake Arrowhead for almost 40 years. Michael was truly a self-made man, after growing up with a difficult childhood he was determined to be successful. In his late teens he worked in the oil industry and lived for a time in Saudi Arabia, when he returned to the United States, he attended Riverside Community College and took his first Administration of Justice Class. This was where he decided that police work was his true path in life. In 1966 he joined the Riverside County Sheriff's Department. Michael went from a Deputy to Homicide Detective. Among Michael's many accomplishments were Officer of the Year Award in 1980 while with the Riverside Sheriff's Department. Michael helped create the California State Anti-Gang Task Force Association, where he sat on the Board of Directors for many years. He taught many gang prevention classes at the Riverside Academy of Justice. In 1981 he was promoted to the Riverside County District Attorneys Office, Bureau of Investigation and was subsequently promoted to Assistant Chief Investigator where he remained until his retirement in 1996. Michael was an avid golfer and, enjoyed many days playing on courses around the Western United States and Canada. Michael was also a part-time College Instructor at Riverside Community College District, where he taught Administration of Justice for over 34 years. He truly loved teaching his students and sharing his extensive experience in Law Enforcement. In addition, he created and was the Director of the "Criminalistics Learning Laboratory" at the Riverside Campus for students to actively participate and, challenge themselves in the study of Forensic Science and Crime Scene Investigation. Michael always encouraged his students to continue their education and, succeed in anything they chose to do. In 2012 he received The Glenn Hunt Outstanding Associate Faculty Service Award for Exceptional Service. He was fondly known by his students as the "CSI Professor". Michael always gave of himself freely and, helped someone in need whenever he could. Michael was married to the love of his life, Lisa, for over 26 years. They traveled extensively, and enjoyed life to the fullest. Michael is survived by his wife Lisa; his daughter Kelly, (husband Jim) of Cameron Park, CA; his son Michael Jr. (wife Jill) also of Cameron Park, CA. In addition, Michael is also survived by 6 grandchildren: Ashley, Bobby, Joshua, Allison, James and Jenna; great grandchild Ryder; Rosemarie and Henry Sartor of Riverside, CA, who loved him like a son; Aunt Annette Lalicker of Murrieta CA and, his favorite dog, a Pembroke Welsh Corgi named Sophie. Please join us in celebration and honor of his life and many years of public service, on March 1, 2014 at 12 P.M. at Harvest Christian Fellowship, 6115 Arlington Ave, Riverside CA 92504. In lieu of flowers, Michael's wish was to establish a scholarship in his name to help future students pursue their dream of a career in Law enforcement or the Forensic Sciences. Family suggests donations to the Michael D. Joyce Memorial Scholarship Fund at Riverside Community College Foundation, 4800 Magnolia Avenue, Riverside, CA 92506.
