Mike Gufrinck Obituary
MIKE GUFRINCK aka SGT. MICHIEL M. GUDE (USA Ret.) Age 75, passed away on June 13, 2015 at his home in Riverside, Ca. He was born in Indonesia on January 23, 1940. After being held captive in a Japanese concentration camp which ended the Dutch rule during WWII and after surviving the Dutch Indonesian Revolution, Mike, his mother and siblings immigrated to Holland. He attended the Dutch Maritime Naval Academy where he traveled the world. After graduating, he moved to the United States to continue his fruitful life. Mike joined the United State Army in 1967. After basic, he attended jump school and Ranger school at Fort Benning, Georgia. After completing training he was assigned with the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He served in Vietnam in 1969 with the 173rd. Airborne Brigade Recon team (L.R.R.P.). While on a 4- man recon patrol, Mike stepped on a landmine which severed his right leg. Fortunately, 44 years later in 2014, he was able to reunite with his recon team for the first time since the incident. After Vietnam, in 1971, Mike married Rosa Mirtha Curioso in California. Together they built and raised a family full of love, adventure, and laughter. He enjoyed making others smile and laugh with his sense of humor. The love he had for his wife, kids, and grandchildren will always be cherished and memorable. He served his career as an engineer in the automotive remanufacturing industry; retiring in 2002. Mike is survived by his wife Mirtha of 44 years and his children and grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Hannie, family members in California, Peru, Indonesia, and Holland. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday June, 24, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at the Riverside National Cemetery located at 22495 Van Buren Blvd. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
