MIKE SCANLON Mike Scanlon entered into eternal rest the morning of September 19, 2015 with his family by his side. He was born in Jackson, Mississippi on August 26, 1927 to William Joseph and Mary Melanie Scanlon. Mike was the youngest of 8 children. Education was important to his parents, and he was encouraged to work hard and learned early on that through perseverance, you may attain any goal that you set for yourself. Mike enlisted in the U.S. Navy at 17 years of age. He was a Navy Corpsman. Following his service in the U.S. Navy, Mike attended the University of Mississippi earning a Bachelor of Arts in Education. In 1951, he moved to California where he attended California State University Long Beach. It was there that he earned his Teaching Credential and a Master of Arts degree in Education. Following his schooling, he taught in both the Pico Rivera and Garden Grove School Districts for 12 years prior to his 27 year career within the Corona-Norco Unified School District. Most notably, Mike was principal at Sierra Vista Elementary School in Norco, for 21 years. One of the highlights of his career came in 1987, when Sierra Vista was named in the 99th percentile for schools within the state of California. Following his retirement in 1990, Mike was elected to the Corona-Norco School Board where he continued to serve the community until 1995. Mike had a passion, dedication and commitment to providing the best education possible to every student. His constant desire to always strive toward making a better tomorrow was admirable. He is survived by his two children John Scanlon (Deanna) of Redlands, and Suzi Scanlon-Smith (Mike Smith) of Rancho Cucamonga. Mike is also survived by his grandchildren, Garrett Scanlon-Smith of Rancho Cucamonga, and Brian & Alex Scanlon of Redlands.
