Mildred Anajane Ren Obituary
MRS. MILDRED ANAJANE REN Mrs. Mildred Anajane Ren passed away February 28, 2013, at the age of 89 in Prairie Village, Kansas, near the home of her daughter. She was born February 19, 1924, the fourth of five children, on a farm near Colchester, Illinois, to the late Leslie and Nora (Stone) Vail. At age 19 she began teaching in a one-room schoolhouse for children in grades 1 through 8. In January, 1947, she was married in Macomb, Illinois, to Gerald J. Ren. By the end of the year they were stationed at March A.F.B., near Riverside, California, where daughter, Terry, was born. After 15 years of living in Japan, England, and various states, they retired to the Riverside area. With hopes for a large family unfulfilled, Mildred's love for children now led her back to her work in teaching. From 1962 until her retirement in 1988, Mildred taught at Val Verde Elementary School, first in an ungraded system-which brought memories of her "little red schoolhouse" in Illinois-and later in kindergarten through second grade. Preceded in death by her sister Beryl McCormick and brothers Donald and Gerald Vail, Mildred is survived by daughter, Terry, and son-in-law, Perry Pugno, loved as a son; also three cherished grandchildren, Andrew (wife Colleen), Joseph (wife Keri) and Benjamin (wife Courtney); and six great grandchildren: Connor, Parker and Francesca; AJ and Abby; and Robbie, respectively. Her sister and brother-in-law, Elaine and Duane Montgomery of Riverside also survive, as well as three sisters-in-law in Illinois: Dorothy Vail and Bernice Brooks of Macomb and Wilma Ren of Good Hope. Mildred will be laid to rest with her husband, Jerry, in Riverside National Cemetery-a truly fitting place not far from their Riverside home, embraced on three sides by their first real home together, the school where she taught, and General Old Golf Course where they happily spent most of their recreational time. A grave side memorial will be conducted Friday, July 19, 2013, at 10am in Riverside National Cemetery, Staging Area #1. Arrangements were entrusted to Akes Family Funeral Home, Riverside, CA 951-785-4071.
