Modena J. MacFarlane Obituary
MODENA J. MACFARLANE Mom, age 89, was born on June 5, 1923 in Fort Wayne, Indiana to Albert J. Terry and Birdie Anderson Terry. She passed away peacefully at her home in Riverside on November 5, 2012. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Otis C. MacFarlane; daughters Denise MacFarlane Flanagan and Edythe (Gilbert III) Brown; and sons Otis Terry MacFarlane and Frederic C. MacFarlane. She is also survived by her grandsons Gilbert Brown IV and Patrick MacFarlane; granddaughter Courtney Brown; great grandsons Deshaun Brown and Jaylen Anderson. Her memory will also be cherished by her nephew Victor B. McFarlane and wife Thaderine and a host of other loved ones. Mom worked for the Federal Government for 33 years starting in Dayton, Ohio at Wright Patterson AFB, where she also met Otis. They were married June 30, 1946. The family moved to Riverside in 1962, and Mom and Dad worked at Norton Air Force Base in San Bernardino and Space and Missiles Systems in El Segundo. Whether working or in retirement, family always came first with Mom. She made sure that birthdays and the holidays were special for her children and grandchildren and wherever we lived there was a place for Dad's den. Mom was an avid reader and researcher, preferring non-fiction; especially history and health. In retirement she enjoyed attending meetings of the LIFE Society at UCR Extension and she volunteered at UCR's Rivera Library. Her interest in health fueled her passion for walking and running, beginning in 1979 and continuing until 2002 at the age of 79. She entered many competitions from 10k to marathons, and she won or placed in the majority of them. One of her favorite races each year was the Mission Inn Run in Riverside. We will miss Mom's love and her caring, giving nature, but she will never leave our hearts. Services will be private, but a celebration of her life will be held at a future time. A special heartfelt thank you to Shirley Wilson, Mom's caregiver and companion the last three years. Thanks also to the staff at Charter Hospice for the care and comfort that they provided. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be made to Charter Hospice, 1012 East Cooley Dr., Suite G, Colton CA 92324 and/or UCI MInd at www.alz.uci. edu
