Newell Vernon Ralphs Obituary
NEWELL VERNON RALPHS Newell, surrounded by his family in their Riverside home, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, October 14, 2014. He was born in South Gate, CA on June 5, 1948 to Newell and Rose (Rinaldi) Ralphs. At age 9 he moved to Perris with his family where he attended school, graduating from Perris High School in 1966. While attending Mt. San Jacinto College, he was drafted into the US Army and served active-duty stateside until he was deployed for combat duty to Vietnam for eight months. Upon his honorable discharge, he soon went to work for Unified Western Groceries, Inc. until he retired after 29 years of service. The grocery business seemed like a natural career path since Newell and his twin brother, Richard, at age 10 began working during their summer months for their Uncle Augie Di Petro, a local farmer in Perris. Newell was not the only family member interested in the grocery business. His great, great uncles George A. and Walter B. Ralphs opened their first grocery store "Ralphs Brothers Grocers" in 1873 in Los Angeles, CA. In 1911, the Ralphs opened its first branch store and the concept of the chain store was born. Newell and his wife of 39 years, Patricia, were married on August 18, 1975 and resided in Sun City and Riverside with son, Michael. Newell was an avid reader and loved to learn about the stock market, rocks and gems, and music, but his passion was the Bible and it's teachings. He was a member of Harvest Christian Fellowship for nearly 14 years. Although shy, he loved to visit with people and could carry on a conversation about almost anything. He led a simple life and was a caring and loving man. He especially enjoyed Monday family dinners and holidays with his family. Newell is survived by his wife, Patricia; son, Michael; 4 grandchildren, Tiffany, Tommy, Jennifer, and Matthew Ralphs; one great granddaughter, Mikayla; brother, Richard; 5 sisters-in-law; 3 brothers-in-law; mother and father-in-law, Robert and Betty Clark; and ten nieces and nephews. Visitation will be on October 29, 2014 from 10 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and Memorial Services at 12:00 noon at Acheson & Graham Garden of Prayer Mortuary at 7944 Magnolia Ave., Riverside and interment will be held at Riverside National Cemetery at 2:15 p.m.
