Norman Albin Lostbom Obituary
NORMAN ALBIN LOSTBOM Age 84 years old, USAF Retired, passed away on April 10, 2016 at Levine-Dixon Hospice House in Huntersville, North Carolina. Norm was born in Long Branch, New Jersey on May 4, 1931. During his youth, Norm grew up in New York City and later lived in Rye, New York. He was a 1949 graduate of Rye High School where he was a star on the Track and Field Team. Norm was the son of the late Frithiof Laurentius Eliasson Lostbom and Emilie Schmetzer Lostbom. Also preceded in death were brothers Frederick and Royal Lostbourne, and sisters, Helen Dougherty and Ingrid Lostbom. In November 1948, Norm enlisted in the New York Air National Guard and served until his release in October 1949 to enlist in the United States Air Force. He served during the Korean and Vietnam wars as a cartographer-photogrammetrist, assigned to reconnaissance technical squadrons in the U.S., Japan and Germany. While stationed in Germany, Norm was employed on a part-time basis by General Electric as a draftsman, working on the European Aircraft Warning and Control System, Project 412L. Following military retirement, Norm completed studies at Chapman College, Orange County, CA and obtained his B.A. degree and secondary teaching credential. In 1970, Norm was employed by the County of Riverside, CA. During that time, he worked in the County Planning Department and subsequently organized the county-wide Code Enforcement Division, serving as Director until his retirement in 1992. Norm was an active church member and served in various positions throughout his life. Upon retirement, he served as chaplain assistant at the Riverside County Regional Medical Center in Moreno Valley, CA. Norm was a faithful member of the Huntersville United Methodist Church in Huntersville, NC. He was a very loving and devoted husband to his wife Akiko (Kay) Lostbom, whom he married in Tokyo, Japan in September 1953, they were married for 62 years. Also, Norm was the most wonderful, kind and loving father to his children: daughters Carol-Ann Detoy of Concord, NC, Audrey-Ann Hagman of Huntersville, NC and son, Marvin Lostbom of Moreno Valley, CA. He was also a very loving and caring grandfather in EVERY way to his grandchildren, Jason Huitt of CA, and granddaughters Candace Huitt and Ashlee Huitt of NC. Norm's sons-in-law, Preston Hagman and William Detoy were very fortunate to have a great father-in-law and true friend in Norm. He will be missed every second of the day by all of us. A memorial service was held April 13, 2016 in North Carolina. Inurnment will be in Greenwood Union Cemetery, Rye, NY. Memorials may be made to the Huntersville United Methodist Church, pastor discretionary fund or the Levine-Dixon Hospice House of Huntersville, NC.
