Ozella Abernathy Bounds

1909 - 2016 Obituary Condolences Gallery
OZELLA ABERNATHY BOUNDS 106 Years young Teacher and longtime resident of Hemet, CA passed away on Thursday, January 14, 2016, just days short of her 107th birthday. Ozella was born in Coalgate, Oklahoma on January 24, 1909 to James William and Minnie Ola Abernathy. She graduated from Mansfield High School in Arkansas in 1927, and obtained her Teacher's License. She graduated from Arkansas Teachers College in 1929. She taught school in Arkansas for 11 years, and during that time she married Jesse Bounds and had two beautiful daughters, Nada and Karen. She later divorced, and as a single mother received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education in 1946. Ozella moved to Hemet and was offered a teaching position in 1947, which she gladly accepted. She taught various grades, but especially enjoyed teaching English at the Jr. High School. Continuing her education, in 1957 she received her Master's Degree in Educational Psychology and Guidance. Ozella has a treasured possession of a photo taken alongside President Harry S. Truman, who she personally met during a visit to his presidential library in Missouri. She retired in 1971, however soon found a love for substitute teaching. She taught many grades but enjoyed classes in special education. She was a substitute for over 25 years until she again retired at the age of 89. Ozella was put on this earth to teach, and she was amazing at it. She faithfully corresponded with many of her students, and attended numerous events and get togethers. She loved to travel, and made many trips across the U.S. to visit family, friends, students, and to see historical sites. She had a green thumb, and spent time in her yard gardening, and enjoying every minute outside - rain or shine! She was an excellent cook bringing together family and friends for many celebrations. In 2007, the Hemet Area Museum Association acknowledged her as Hemet Unified Teacher Extraordinaire. In 2009, at her 100th birthday celebration she was presented with a Proclamation from the City of Hemet, and in 2013 she traveled to Mansfield, Arkansas where she was inducted into the Mansfield High School Wall of Fame. Ozella Bounds is predeceased by her daughter Nada Ricketts, parents, brothers Clint Abernathy and Wendell Abernathy, sister Violet Taylor and granddaughter Sharin Yoder. She is survived by her daughter, Karen Yoder (Richard); grandchildren Alan Yoder (Joan), Renetta Pollock (Patrick), Deborah Johnson (Jon), Dale Yoder (Tammy), Nadine Weatherby, Ron Ricketts (Jana), Randy Ricketts, and Kimberly Perez (Fred) as well as 12 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren, and a loving network of nephews, nieces, cousins, and relatives. We will remember her smile, her warmth, her knowledge, her love for life, family and friends, but also students, colleagues and anyone she met, many of whom over time also became lifetime friends. She touched the lives of everyone she encountered, and made a difference in the lives of many. Memorial services will be held at Hemet Valley Mortuary on Friday, January 29, 2016 at 11:00 a.m.
