Philip James Clinton Obituary
PHILIP JAMES CLINTON died November 23, 2015 in Riverside, CA after a short illness. He was 79 years old. Philip James was born in Wichita, Kansas on February 11, 1936 to Emmert and Grace Clinton. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Des Moines, Iowa where Philip James was raised. To his childhood family, he was known as Jimmy, to his later friends and co-workers, he was called Phil. After his high school graduation in June 1954, Phil started work as a Commercial Artist, but it was in July 1956 that he found his true calling when he signed on as a fireman with the Des Moines Fire Department thus beginning a 35-year career in firefighting. He married Drusilla (Dee) McNally on September 3, 1955. Two of their daughters were born while living in Des Moines. In an effort to escape Des Moines winters, he moved his family west to Riverside, California in 1962 where two more daughters would join the family. In Riverside, he joined the Fire Department and enjoyed a fulfilling, successful 30-year career with the RFD where he served as Fireman, Engineer, Captain and Battalion Chief before retiring in 1992. He served as City Fire Marshall for 8 years. His years in Riverside were spent in many different pursuits. He, along with his family, enjoyed dune buggying, boating and motorcycle riding with fellow fireman families. Together, he and Dee enjoyed bowling, country dancing, traveling in their RV, and participating in obedience shiows and hunt trials with their black Labradors. After Dee's death in 2002, he continued to travel in his motorhome with his companion, Peggy, socialize with fellow retired firemen and attend events with his daughters and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Dee, his granddaughter, Brandie, his grandson, Cody, and his brother, Stanley as well as his parents. He is survived by his four daughters, Lynn Van Patter (Mike) of Phoenix, AZ, Cathy Akers (David) of King City, CA, LeAna Bui (Thang) of Rancho Santa Margarita, CA, Carol Smith (Gale) of Corona, CA, eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild, his sister-in-law, Marjorie and four nieces and nephews. Services will be held on December 12, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at Acheson & Graham Garden of Prayer Mortuary at 7944 Magnolia Ave., Riverside, CA. A reception will follow the ceremony. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Riverside Firefighters Foundation, P.O. Box 7817, Riverside, CA 92513.
